Quantity Breaks on Shopify: Pricing Volume Discounts That Convert

A quantity break is tiered pricing on a single product: the more units a shopper buys, the less each one costs. It is the least complicated bundle you can run and one of the most effective, because it meets a shopper who was going to buy one and gives them a reason to buy two or three.

Who quantity breaks work best for

Anything people use up and reorder is a natural fit: coffee, supplements, pet food, skincare, cleaning products, socks. If a customer will need more of it eventually, letting them stock up now at a better price is an easy yes.

How to structure the tiers

Three tiers is the sweet spot. More than that and the choice gets noisy. A clean, effective ladder looks like this:

• Buy 1: full price, the anchor.
• Buy 2: save around 10%, an easy first step up.
• Buy 3: save around 20%, marked as the best value.

The one pricing rule you must not break

Buying more should never raise the per-unit price. Whatever ladder you set, the average price per item has to keep falling as quantity rises. If a shopper can end up paying more per unit by adding one, the offer looks broken and trust evaporates. Apply your top-tier discount to any quantity at or above the top tier, so four or five units keep the best rate.

Present it so people size up

Show each tier as an option with the total price, the price per unit, and the amount saved. Pre-select the best-value tier so it anchors the decision. Shoppers respond to a clearly labeled best deal and to seeing exactly how much they save far more than to a bare percentage.

Keep the checkout honest

Make sure the discount that shows in the popup is the price charged at checkout, and that it applies whether the shopper used the bundle or simply added the qualifying quantity to the cart. A cart-aware discount avoids the classic complaint: I have three in my cart, so where is my discount.
