In this article

Bundling is one of the few tactics that helps the shopper and the store at the same time. The customer gets a better price and less decision fatigue, and you get a bigger basket. This guide covers the main bundle types, how to price the tiers, and how to present them so people actually size up.

The two bundle types that cover most stores

Start simple. Almost every store gets most of the value from two formats: quantity bundles and build-your-own bundles.

Quantity bundles (same product, tiered discount)

One product, priced cheaper per unit as the quantity goes up: buy 1 at full price, buy 2 and save 10%, buy 3 and save 20%. This is ideal for consumables and anything people reorder, like coffee, supplements, or socks.

Build-your-own bundles (mix and match)

The shopper fills a set number of slots from a pool you choose, then unlocks a discount or a free gift when the set is complete. It feels personal and works well for skincare routines, snack boxes, and apparel sets.

How to price the tiers

The goal is to make the next tier up feel like the obvious choice without giving away your margin. A few rules that hold up in practice:

  • Keep the jump between tiers meaningful, roughly 8% to 12% per step, so the upgrade feels worth it.
  • Cap the top tier at a discount you can defend on margin, then apply it to everything above that quantity.
  • Never let buying more raise the per-unit price. The average price should always fall as quantity rises.
  • Highlight one tier as best value and pre-select it, so the shopper anchors on the bigger pack.

The psychology of why bundles convert

A flat 15% off feels like a discount. Buy 3, save 20% feels like a reward you earn by doing something. The framing matters: shoppers respond to progress and to a clearly labeled best deal far more than to a plain percentage. Showing the per-unit price and the total saved makes the value concrete.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Too many tiers. Three is usually the sweet spot, five is confusing.
  • Hiding the savings. Always show the amount saved, not just the new price.
  • Discounts that cannibalize single-unit sales you would have made anyway.
  • Bundles that only appear deep in the funnel, where few people see them.

How to launch a bundle without a heavy setup

You do not need a complex bundle app or custom code. A selling bar that opens a bundle popup lets shoppers pick a quantity or build a set and add it to the cart in one step, and the discount applies automatically at the cart. That keeps the pattern simple for you and frictionless for the shopper.
