Birthday, Milestone & Anniversary Rewards: Automating Moments That Feel Personal
The highest-performing loyalty emails are triggered ones. Here's how to set up automatic rewards that arrive at exactly the right moment.
Triggered milestone rewards consistently outperform broadcast loyalty campaigns. A birthday email with a points bonus generates open rates of 40–60% (vs 15–25% for standard emails) and purchase rates 3–5× higher than a weekly newsletter. The reason is simple: they're expected, they're personal, and they arrive at a moment when the recipient is already thinking about themselves.

Setup:

Purchase milestone rewards
Award a surprise bonus at key purchase milestones — 2nd purchase, 5th purchase, 10th purchase, 25th purchase.
The milestone reward does two things:
- It surprises and delights at a moment of demonstrated loyalty.
- It creates a number customers try to reach — the "10th order gift" becomes a thing customers actively work toward.

Anniversary emails have the highest engagement of any Gratify-triggered email in beta merchant data. They work because they demonstrate that you track the relationship, not just the transactions.
Spend milestone rewards
Award a bonus when a customer crosses cumulative spend milestones — $500 lifetime, $1,000 lifetime, $2,500 lifetime. These work especially well as tier transitions — the spend milestone bonus acts as a tier-upgrade celebration.
