Countdown Timer Bars: Honest Urgency That Lifts Conversion 8-18%
Set up evergreen and fixed-deadline countdowns in Flexibar without crossing into deceptive UX.
Countdown timers work because urgency is one of the most reliable conversion levers in ecommerce. Across our merchant base, adding a countdown to an existing offer bar lifts conversion 8–18% on the affected pages - but only when the urgency is real. Fake countdowns hurt long-term trust and now violate consumer protection rules in the EU, UK, and several US states.
Two countdown modes in Flexibar
1. Fixed deadline. Counts down to a specific date and time you set. Best for:
- Real promotions ending Sunday at midnight.
- Black Friday / Cyber Monday windows.
- Product launches and pre-order cutoffs.
- Shipping cutoffs ("Order in the next 4h 22m for delivery by Friday").
2. Evergreen / per-visitor. Starts a countdown the first time a visitor sees the bar, persists across pages, and resets after a configurable window (commonly 24 or 48 hours). Best for:
- Welcome offers for first-time visitors.
- Cart-recovery urgency once a product is added.
- Limited-time discount codes that genuinely have a per-customer expiry.
The line you should not cross
The EU's Unfair Commercial Practices Directive and the UK's Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act explicitly prohibit countdown timers that reset or restart to manufacture urgency. Flexibar's evergreen mode stores the original start time per visitor (in localStorage) and respects it across sessions, so when the timer hits zero it actually expires. Don't override this.
Setup walkthrough
- Create a new bar and choose Countdown.
- Pick Fixed deadline or Evergreen.
- For fixed: select date, time, and timezone. Flexibar shows the timer in the visitor's local timezone by default.
- For evergreen: set the duration (24h is most common) and the message before/after expiry.
- Write the offer copy. Keep it under 50 characters so the timer fits beside it on mobile.
- Set what happens at zero - hide the bar, swap to a "Sale ended" message, or rotate to your next bar.
Copy patterns that convert
- "Sale ends in 02:14:33 · Save 25%"
- "Free shipping for the next 4h 22m"
- "Your 15% welcome code expires in 23:59:12"
- "Order in 3h 12m for delivery by Friday"
What not to do
- Don't use a countdown if you don't have a real deadline. Shoppers notice when "ends today" still works tomorrow.
- Don't pair countdowns with vague offers. "Hurry!" with no discount or context is noise.
- Don't run more than one countdown bar at a time - competing urgency cancels itself out.
